Therapy vs. Coaching: What’s the Difference?

People often ask how coaching is different from therapy—and it’s an important question.

Therapy is ideal for someone who’s emotionally struggling, overwhelmed by past trauma, or feeling unable to function in daily life. Think of it like being in a car that’s broken down on the side of the road. The person can’t move forward, and they may not even see a path ahead. Therapy helps get the engine running again. It’s about deep emotional healing, exploring the past, and working through anxiety, depression, or trauma with the support of a licensed mental health professional.

Coaching, especially the kind offered through Fulfillment Project, is for people who are already moving, but may be heading in the wrong direction, or simply feel misaligned with where they're going. They're in the driver’s seat, the car is moving, but something doesn’t feel right. Coaching helps you course-correct: identify what you truly want, figure out what’s getting in the way, and take direct, practical steps toward a more fulfilling life.

My style of coaching is more directive, more honest, and more action-oriented than therapy typically allows. Therapy often centers on reflection, insight, and emotional processing. Coaching, on the other hand, is about goal-setting, forward movement, and accountability. I don’t tiptoe around the truth. I say what I see, ask tough questions, and stay alongside you as you make changes.

Therapy also has boundaries rooted in clinical ethics—it stays in the session, and usually doesn’t allow for real-time communication. With coaching, I occasionally offer messaging access between sessions, especially helpful for clients juggling busy lives, parenting, or big transitions. Coaching meets you where you are—emotionally and practically.

I do not offer therapy through The Fulfillment Project. I am not currently practicing as a licensed clinician in this setting, and coaching is not a replacement for mental health treatment. If you're unsure which path is right for you, we can talk through it together.
